Privacy Policy
Last updated: 3 November 2026
The short version
- Speakness records your spoken answers so it can transcribe them and give you feedback. We store your recordings, transcripts and results in your account until you delete your account or ask us to delete them.
- We send your audio and transcripts to OpenAI to transcribe them and to write your feedback and practice questions.
- We do not sell your information, show ads, or track you across other companies’ apps.
- The app reports which screens you use, errors and crashes to Expo so we can fix problems and improve Speakness. These reports never include your recordings, transcripts, name or email, and are deleted after 90 days.
- You can ask us for a copy of your information, or to correct or delete it, at hello@speakness.app.
1. Who we are
Speakness is a speaking practice app operated by AZ Labs Limited, a company registered in New Zealand (“AZ Labs”, “we”, “us”). We are responsible for the personal information described in this policy. We handle it in line with the New Zealand Privacy Act 2020 and the privacy laws that apply where you live.
2. Information we collect
| Category | What it includes | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Account | Email address, your name if you choose to share it, your username, and a password if you sign up with email (we store only a secure hash of it). | You, or Apple or Google when you use their sign-in. With Sign in with Apple you can hide your email; we then receive a relay address. |
| Onboarding answers | The goals you choose, what you say holds you back, and whether you want to work on delivery, content or both. | You |
| Recordings | Audio of your answers to practice questions. | You, through the microphone, only while you are recording |
| Transcripts and results | Transcripts with word timing; speech measurements such as pace, pauses, filler words, pitch range and loudness; AI-written reviews and suggestions. | Generated from your recordings |
| Practice history | Which questions you answered or skipped, and personal questions written for you from your past answers. | Your use of the app |
| Subscription | Whether you have an active subscription or trial, which plan, and renewal dates. We never receive your card or payment details. | Apple, through RevenueCat |
| Technical data | IP address, device and app version, and timestamps in service logs. | Collected automatically by our service providers when the app connects to them |
| Usage and diagnostics | Screens you open, steps such as finishing a recording, onboarding or a purchase, error and crash reports, app speed, and the web addresses the app connects to. Tagged with a scrambled version of your account ID, never your name or email. Never your recordings or transcripts. | The app, sent to Expo |
Some settings stay on your device and are not sent to us, such as your daily reminder time and question preferences. Reminders are local notifications scheduled by your device. We do not use a push notification server.
3. How we use it
- To create and secure your account and sign you in.
- To transcribe and analyse your recordings and show you your results, feedback and progress over time.
- To choose your daily question and write new questions based on what you have talked about.
- To provide your subscription and free trial, and restore purchases.
- To keep the service working, fix problems and prevent abuse.
- To understand which parts of the app are used and where people get stuck, so we can improve it.
- To answer you when you contact us, and to meet our legal obligations.
We do not sell or rent your personal information. We do not use it for advertising, and we do not track you across other companies’ apps or websites.
4. AI processing
Speakness uses OpenAI’s API for three things:
- Transcription. We send each recording to OpenAI’s speech-to-text model to produce a transcript with word timing.
- Feedback. We send the transcript, the question and your speech measurements to produce a review and suggestions.
- Personal questions. We send transcripts of recent answers, the questions you answered or skipped, and your onboarding goals and obstacles to write new practice questions for you.
OpenAI processes this data to provide the service to us. Under OpenAI’s API terms, data sent through the API is not used to train its models by default. AI output can be wrong. Treat it as practice feedback, not professional advice.
5. Who we share it with
We share information only with service providers that help us run Speakness, and only what they need to do that work. They process it on our behalf and under their own security and privacy commitments.
| Provider | Purpose | Location |
|---|---|---|
| Supabase | Sign-in, database and storage for recordings | India (Mumbai) |
| OpenAI | Transcription, feedback and personal questions | United States |
| RevenueCat | Subscription status, linked to your account ID | United States |
| Apple | Sign in with Apple and in-app purchases | Under Apple’s privacy policy |
| Sign in with Google | Under Google’s privacy policy | |
| Expo | App usage, error and crash reports | United States |
| Vercel | Hosting for this website | United States |
We may also disclose information if the law requires it, to protect someone’s safety, or as part of a sale or restructure of our business. If our business is sold, this policy keeps applying to your information.
6. Where it is stored
Your account, recordings and results are stored with Supabase in India. Data sent to OpenAI, RevenueCat, Expo and Vercel is processed in the United States. These countries may not have the same privacy protections as New Zealand. We use reputable providers and send them only what they need to provide the service.
7. How long we keep it
We keep your account, recordings, transcripts and results for as long as your account exists, so you can look back on your progress. We do not delete recordings automatically after a set time.
Usage and diagnostics reports are deleted automatically after 90 days. They carry only a scrambled account ID, so once your account is deleted they can no longer be linked to you.
If you ask us to delete your account, we delete your profile, recordings, transcripts, results and practice history within 30 days. Copies in our providers’ backups are removed when those backups expire. We may keep a short record of the request itself. Apple keeps its own records of your purchases.
8. Security
Data travels between the app and our providers over encrypted connections. Recordings are kept in private storage. Database rules limit your recordings, transcripts and results to your own account. No system is completely secure, but we work to protect your information and will tell you and the authorities about a serious breach if the law requires it.
9. Your rights and choices
- Access and correction. You can ask for a copy of the personal information we hold about you, and ask us to correct it.
- Deletion. You can delete your account in the app from Settings → Delete account, which deletes it straight away, or email hello@speakness.app from the address on your account and we will delete it as described above. Deleting your account does not cancel your subscription; cancel that in your Apple Account settings.
- Microphone and notifications. You can turn these permissions off at any time in your device settings. Without microphone access the app cannot record answers.
- Other rights. Depending on where you live, you may have more rights, such as to object to some processing or to receive your data in a portable format. Contact us and we will respond as the law requires.
We respond to requests within 20 working days. If you are unhappy with how we handled your information, please tell us first. You can also complain to the New Zealand Office of the Privacy Commissioner at privacy.org.nz or to the privacy regulator where you live.
10. Children
Speakness is not intended for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their personal information. If you believe a child under 13 has given us information, contact us and we will delete it.
11. This website
These pages do not use cookies, analytics or tracking. Our hosting provider keeps standard request logs, such as IP address and browser type, to serve and protect the site.
12. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as Speakness changes. We will change the date at the top. If a change materially affects how we use your information, we will tell you in the app before it takes effect.
